Bombing operations such as ARC LIGHT and LINEBACKER depended heavily on air refueling. ![]() Even long-range bombers like the B-52 needed refueling to reach their targets and return to base on far-off Guam. I served in Southeast Asia during most of 1972 and had an opportunity to witness much of the successful implementation of the President’s strategy. He implemented it in stages, starting with the withdrawal of US troops that began in 1969, followed by the rapprochement with the Peoples Republic of China in early 1972 and culminating with the repulse of North Vietnam’s 1972 ‘Easter Offensive’ and the Linebacker bombing campaigns against the North.
